As in all the military, the JROTC has a Chain of Command, in every corps, in every branch. The ranks start from Enlisted cadets (Private to Command Sergeant Major) up to the Officer ranks (Second Lieutenant to Colonel). Enlisted ranks are the base ranking system, for the main student body. Officer ranks are (typically) given to staff members (Battalion Commander, Executive Officer, Command Sergeant Major, S-1, S-2, S-3, S-4, S-5 and Company Commanders) who are usually Juniors or Seniors.
The Enlisted ranks are as followed: Cadet Private (PVT), Cadet Private First Class (PFC), Cadet Corporal (CPL), Cadet Sergeant (SGT), Cadet Staff Sergeant (SSG), Cadet Sergeant First Class (SFC), Cadet Master Sergeant (MSG), Cadet First Sergeant (1SG), Cadet Sergeant major (SGM), Cadet Command Sergeant Major (CSM).
The Officer ranks are as followed: Cadet Second Lieutenant (2LT), Cadet First Lieutenant (1LT), Cadet Captain (CPT), Cadet Major (MAJ), Cadet Lieutenant Colonel (LTC), Cadet Colonel (COL).
As mentioned, the Officer ranks, or "O" ranks (O-1 through O-6) are staff members, which have specific duties and jobs. The Battalion Commander is the cadet whom over-sees operations, cadet activities and duties (typically the Cadet Colonel rank). The Executive Officer, or "XO", is a cadet whom is the direct assistant of the Battalion Commander, or "BC", and gives orders to other staff from the BC, over-sees operations and cadet activities. The S-1, or adjutant, deals with promotions, awards and other cadet personal information. The S-2, or Intel officer, moniters cadet's actions, moniters activities such as Flag Detail and/or teams. The S-3, or Training and Operations officer, is in charge of the training schedules, such as Drill Team training, PT, Service Learning projects and things of this nature. The S-4, or Supply officer, is in charge of a Battalion's supply room, issuing cadet's uniform pieces, ranks, insignias, hats ect. The last officer, the S-5, is the Public officer. The S-5 deals with media, writing articles about activities, speaks to media in any interviews, takes pictures and in some cases makes recruitment videos and senior fare-well videos. Company Commanders are in charge of the Alpha, Bravo and Charlie companies (sometimes more, such as Delta, Echo and Foxtrot) and commands the cadets in their juristrictions with orders from Cadres (or the Senior Army Instructor, or the JROTC teacher(s) ) and other important information.
